Trailer - Basic Instinct

Analysis of Basic Instinct Trailer

• You are told the name of the film at the very beginning and the very end of the trailer, this is so the audience know what trailer they are about to watch and so it sticks in their mind.
• We are told that Michael Douglas is in the film with him being well known and has starred in various well known films. The information is given to the audience by having his name appear on screen in a red font on a black background.
• We see varied action from the film, you see how the two main characters live separate lives and how they come to meet each other. You then see the action with them both together and how she is playing with his mind.
• The music at the beginning of the film has a drum beat that helps build tension because it reminds you of a heart beat and how it gets quicker as the action happens as the trailer goes on. The music afterwards wouldn't be described as music that you would find in a thriller trailer, but it still creates the tension you expect.
• There is no voice over in the trailer but towards the end of the trailer some text does appear on the screen giving you a hint about what is going to happen in the film.
• The speed of the action shown is rather quick because of the pace being so fast you are never sure what's about to happen which creates more tension for the viewer. I feel that the speed of the trailer would be around the same as it would in the actual film because they would want to keep the audience hooked on the story and have them not lose interest.
• The name of the film is given in the very last frame of the trailer even though you have already been told this, by seeing it more than once it would then be stuck in your head.
• In my personal opinion I think that the poster is more effective than the trailer in making me want to go and see the film. Although the trailer can give you more information about the film because of the action it can show you, but with the poster even though it doesn't give you the information the film does it still draws the audience in.

Trailer - Disclosure

Analysis of Disclosure Trailer

• The title of the film appears on screen near the end of the trailer with the title of the film moving across the screen near the end of the trailer, this is because like most trailers the makers want to keep your attention throughout and they can do this by not telling you the film title at the start and making you watch the whole trailer to find out what it is. 
• We are told who is starring in the film because well-known actors play the two main characters that are seen in the film. The names are given to us by appearing on the screen in a similar way to how all the text appears throughout the trailer.
• The action we see from the film in the trailer is varied because they have used the action that would have drawn the audience in and made them want to see the film, but they have to also use the action that helps tell the story without giving it all away.
• The music at the start of the trailer doesn’t seem to be your typical thriller trailer music, because it wants the audience to think that it is going to be a happy film. Then once the music changes it gets the audiences attention even more with the repetition of the piano along with the strings it begins to make the viewer feel uneasy and wonder what is going to happen.
• The trailers voice over is very much like a narrator telling the viewer the story to the audience, it also blends in with the dialogue you hear from the characters.
• The speed of the action we see in the trailer is shown at a steady pace, which creates tension throughout the trailer because you never know if the action will pick up and give plot lines away.
• In the last frame of the trailer you are shown the names of the people who have produced and directed the film, you are also shown the name of the person whose novel the film is based on. This is what the final few frames of the trailer are like because now they have showed you the main action, which the main actors are and the name of the film they want to give some people involved some credit, such as who composed the music.
• For this film I think that the poster is as equally effective as the trailer because they both clearly tell the audience a general plot of the story and how it is going to effect the characters.

Trailer - Sea of Love

Analysis of Sea of Love Trailer

• The makers have put the name of the film towards the end of the trailer, because just like all trailers you want to keep the audiences attention for as long as possible.
• The names of those who are starring in the film who play the main characters are shown also towards the end of the trailer even before the title of the film. The main reason why they show you the names is because the actors are well known in homes and just because of this it can draw audiences in.
• The action we see from the film isn't great because it is only really the action that helps tell the audience the story it isn't the action that would constantly have the audiences attention. The action you see at the start of the trailer giving you a close up of Al Pacino and the fast pace he is acting automatically gets the audiences attention but from there the audiences attention could be lost.
• Throughout the trailer it doesn’t have constant music playing throughout, instead at the beginning you keep hearing a slasher type sound. Then half way through a crescendo of the string section appears which intensifies the atmosphere of the trailer, with music then playing on top of it.
• There is no voice over for the trailer but you do hear some dialogue spoken by the characters but you don’t always see them say it.
• The speed of the trailer is quick all the way throughout the trailer especially at the start of the trailer because they want the audience to understand what the story is about but they want to get to the main action so they make quick cuts between the start of the trailer to get quickly to the main plot. At the point of when the audience should understand the story line the speed slows down to create tension for the audience because they don't know what is about happen between the Al Pacino's character and the main suspect of the murder he is investigating.
• In the last frame of the trailer it gives you all the main information you need to know about the film including the film title, main cast, the directors, producers and writers.
• I think that for this film the poster is more effective than the trailer because they make a big deal about who is the main actor by having his name in big letters at the top and having him as the main image. It also clearly gives you the main story line in 5 very eye catching lines, then with the title standing out against the background.

Narrative - Storyline

• First day of new term - crowded corridor, girl bumps into the boy (obsession starts).
• Sat in common room - they keep making eye contact, girl getting wrong signals.
• Girl goes out and buys a diary to record the event because she has got strong feelings for him.
• That night she goes out and see's him with his friends - they see her staring and start shouting abuse at her, whilst he stands and laughs.
• Goes home and records her feelings in the diary - she's really upset because he laughed and didn't stop them. ( as she's writing you see tears drop on to the page)
• The next day at school she's sat in the art room and see's him walk past - this is when her drawing obsession starts, by the end of the day she has many drawings of him.
• She rushes home and runs upstairs into her room. You see her wall covered in love hearts and stars. She begins to stick the drawings she has done of him on her wall too.
• Adds him as a friend on Facebook, mostly to keep an eye on him - reading his posts about who he is going out with and where he is going. She also takes his number off his profile. She gets a notification straight away saying he has accepted her, she goes to talk to him but didn't dare so she logs off.
• Later that evening she goes out in the car with her mum and see's him walking alone - she decides to text him saying "Where's your friends?"
• After receiving the text you see him looking around to see if he can see anyone he knows because he doesn't have her number, he replies to the text asking "they're all at work, but who is this?" giving her the information she needs, that being that he is alone until they finish, but she doesn't reply.
• Later that night they are both on Facebook, he decides to talk to her on chat and asked her if she knew the number that text him, she tells him it was her number but rather then let on to him that she is becoming slightly obsessed with him, she says she hasn't had her phone all night and that her sister has stolen it.
• A few days later him and his friends are stood outside her house (unintentionally because they don't know where she lives) She takes advantage of the situation and sits at her window and takes photos of them.
• Him and his friends split up, they all go the opposite way to him - she decides to follow him home (obviously keeping her distance) when she arrives she watches him walk in and takes photos. 
• When she gets home she plugs her camera into her laptop and starts to print off all the pictures, whilst the pictures are printing off she goes to a draw and picks up some pins and strings. Walking to her wall she looks up at the map she has there and places on some pins (one saying 'home') this is so that she can keep track of him.
• Sat in art room one day drawing pictures of him when he walks in (she quickly hides the drawings, sits twirling her hair and blushes) he starts talking to her making her blush even more "Talk to you later" - giving her mixed signals.
• Sat in the common room and bell goes - opens her diary + you see a copy of not only her timetable but his too. The camera follows her finger along the week and down to the lesson he is about to go to - in which she taps the section (PE)
• Moments later you see leave the common room and walk over to the PE - seeing him playing on the Astroturf (takes some photos).
  - Then makes her way into the PE block, making sure no one sees her and walks into the boys changing room.
  -walks to his bag and picks up his bag off the hook - holds it close to her and then smells it (to write in detail the smell in her diary) then puts it in her bag and walks out, and sits on a bench.
  - Then you see them coming out from PE discussing if he had had it when he went in ect.
• Later that night she sits staring at her laptop screen waiting for him to log on and talk to her but it never happened.
  - opens chat and it shows he's off line.
  - she logs off and starts to write her feelings of being angry and upset in her diary.
• The next day she doesn't go to school because of how upset she is, thinking he doesn't care about her.
• At the end of the school day, you see him walking home.
• You then hear a knock at her door, when she opens the door he is stood there - he was worried about her because she was not at school (she thinks about how does she know where she lives but doesn't care) once again getting mixed signals.
• That night he starts talking to her on facebook and she finally gets the courage to tell him how she feels - all he does is apologise to her because he doesn't feel the same.
  -that was the last straw she has to have him!
• Walking behind him in the common room and "accidentally" drops her pen and whilst picking it up she pulls out a bit of his hair then quickly hurries away trying not to be seen
  - you then see her go home and put his hair in a labelled box.
• Last day of school for the week and he leaves to go home and he leaves some work behind.
  - she decides to pick it up and take it home with her
• Saturday morning she texts him and says that she has some of his work she has accidentally picked up.
  - he comes to collect his work, when her mum answers the door and sends him upstairs to get it.
  - Gets to the girls room "Come in" - enters the darkness of her room (you hear a thud) blurred vision, and he is tied to the chair, seeing her wall and that she has finally captured her obsession.
